# Please help! I got my first Peperomia a couple months ago and I…

Please help! I got my first Peperomia a couple months ago and I cannot figure out what this plant needs. I was told it’s supposed to be fairly easy to take care of but no matter what I’ve tried it just keeps getting worse. I read online that it’s a sort of tropical plant so I tried putting it in my greenhouse cabinet to increase its humidity, it didn’t seem to like that so I tried putting it with my regular plants and that hasn’t helped either. I’ve tried putting it closer to a light source, noticed that a lot of the leaves were turning brown around the edges and thought they might be getting burn spots so then I tried putting it farther away from the light. I do not think it is overwatered, I check to make sure the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry before I water it. I also don’t think it’s under watered because I’ve been following the watering schedule and have also been watching it and water it early if I notice it’s looking particularly dry. The pot also has a drainage hole and there’s a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot to give the roots extra room and oxygen. No matter what I do it’s continued to droop and the leaves turn brown. What am I doing wrong?

Oh no, I’m very sorry to hear that. It unfortunately looks like it has some root related issues. It’s sadly rather common that they get that as secondary issues from lower light in the winter time. I recommend very carefully unpotting it and try to remove any excess soil and plant it in a smaller pot (depending on how large the root system is now) in porous and airy soil. Then make sure that it has very sheltered conditions with lots of indirect light, avoiding draft and heaters etc. Hopefully the roots are still rather healthy and it might come back with new growth again 🌱

The pot looks too big and the soil is too dense. My Peperomias are grown in my home mixed well draining soil. Equal parts of potting soil, pumice and perlite. They are thriving!

The suggestions you’ve gotten are good, and while you’re checking on the roots, check for any kind of netting around the root ball. My watermelon pep also looked like this but by the time I found the netting around the roots, it was too late. It basically suffocated my plant to death 😢
