trim and replant, or chop and prop?

i’m trying to decide what to do with this fishbone cactus (disocactus anguliger). it hasn’t been looking good (wilty and dehydrated despite watering when the soil is dry) since i retrieved it from a friend’s house, i’ve suspected root rot but just recently got around to unpotting it. at least half the root system fell off when i rinsed the soil from roots. the remaining roots don’t feel healthy. i’ve attached pictures of it laying down on the front landing, one on each side.

i’m curious, if this were your plant, what would you do? i don’t want to have to discard the root system but i may have to. i’m almost certain there aren’t enough healthy roots left to support the foliage as is. pretty sure the safe choice is to chop and prop, but i thought i’d reach out for others opinions first. thanks in advance for your thoughts.

It looks very dry. Propagating will take some of the burden off the remaining roots.
I would cut as shown on the picture. Let it callous a day. Then, propagate half in water and half in succulent soil. Place the cuttings at least 2 inches deep into the soil. Place the cuttings in bright indirect light. Fertilize when roots appear.

I would rinse the roots with hydrogen peroxide to disinfect. Then, place the mother plant back into succulent soil. Fertilize.

I would do both. Trim sections off for propping and replant the original. If one side fails, you still have the other, and if both succeed you can recombine them after recovery. I did that with a christmas cactus that got attacked by mice, and now both sides are doing great. Also to help with the dehydration, you could give it 10 minute soaks (and thourough draining) for the next few times you water it

I like that idea (Waspinator). It props so easily. I took a broken piece of my big one n popped it into another existing plant which is watered very infrequently. And it did great.
