# Not long ago I got this funny guy at Home Depot and in order to spare…

_Lagt ut av Francesca den 2024-04-18_

Not long ago I got this funny guy at Home Depot and in order to spare myself some blame, he did have a few brown crunchy bits on its edges when I purchased him but they don’t seem to be improving, but I am still getting a new leaf up top. Planta gives conflicting information like 50% under watering or 50% over watering (I guess i’m supposed to just commit to one or the other and hope for the best). I hope some more experienced plant people can take a look and make recommendations!

correct me if i’m wrong, but it looks like wherever the leaf is damaged, it browns there. if the leaves are only crisping up where they’re damaged, then it’s normal and there’s nothing you can do about it and they won’t improve (not on the previously damaged leaves, anyway). new leaves, unless damaged, should look fine. if your plant is crisping up around the edges but there’s no damage, it probably just needs more humidity so i would recommend misting it every day :) hope this helps!

the new leaf is coming in looking pretty healthy, so it may have been physical damage but I also live in a very dry climate (arizona) so maybe more frequent misting, if not the cause of the browning, would help either way. thanks!

Yes I think the browning is likely a humidity issue! And unfortunately in my experience brown portions of the leaves do not come back, but if you have new and healthy growth coming in that makes up for it!

thank you! maybe i’ll have to invest in a humidifier. if you have any recommendations, let me know!

Have you already repotted the plant? There could be mesh constricting the roots. Often times they want a chunkier soil for their roots to breathe as well. Lastly, I found that they’re temperamental when it comes to being moved or handled. If you leave it in one spot and rotate between waterings, it should do well. Don’t be discouraged if majority of the leaves drop. As long as the roots and stem are healthy, it’ll bounce back. Also, don’t size up too big when repotting. It’ll slow down new growth and spend a lot of its energy making new roots while hitting pause on producing new leaves. I hope this helps 😁😁

I have not repotted it! I only got it a short time ago so it is still in its starter pot. when I repot I will try to make sure it’s not too big of a jump and if you have any soil recs please let me know! thank you for the feedback and advice 🫶🏻

I made my own soil mixture before I bought the right stuff. I mix all purpose soil, perlite and mulch to give it a chunkier, airier soil for the roots to breathe and not be sitting in wet soil for too long. They like the soil to be moist but appreciate getting to dry out a little. I hope this helps.
