# Looking for help on an EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE SOP I bought that I need…

Looking for help on an EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE SOP I bought that I need to avoid the death of at all costs. I got it from an influencers first live sale and most of you would cry if you knew what I spent on it, but I didn’t mind because I was supporting her.

Anyway, I didn’t repot it or water it immediately when I got it because I knew that could kill it. I waited until the first time it seemed like it needed water, then repotted it in succulent soil mixed with bonsai mix (with lots of tiny stone chips). I think it is overwatered, because it was last watered 10 days ago and the soil still feels a little moist. My moisture meter says it is dry, but my finger thinks it is slightly damp. I had it in a macrame hanging basket and I am wondering if the cotton cord soaked up some of the drainage and kept the soil moist? Either way, sections of pearls are starting to die.

The first pic is when I first got it and the next two are from today. Planta diagnosed it as fungus?

How much light is it getting? They need lots of light. And a very chunky soil.

Thanks for the reply. I posted more info under Alyssa’s comment.

Oye that sucks, sorry, string of pearls are so so finicky and high maintenance. And having an expensive variegated version is even more high stress.

So, I’ve lost mine and then I saved a few strands and got a new one and replanted my old strands into the new one and so far for three months its been doing good. I water only when the little windows of the pearls start to narrow and close but not fully prune, I don’t even really go off of soil moisture but when the windows close you can tell the soil is very dry. I also keep her directly in an east facing window where she gets direct sun during the morning. I mist her every morning to keep the top from becoming bald. Also, she’s in a very very chunky mix of 75% perlite and 25% cactus soil mix. And in a terracotta pot with drainage. I’d repot her in that kindve environment and take out any dead debris because that’ll attract pests and cause unwanted rot and water loss.

This is where they have been in the purple hanging basket (I said macrame, but it was not in the macrame but the crochet basket my daughter made). Those lights are on 14 hrs a day but the plant is off to the side.

Will post a pic of the soil next.

Here is the soil mix. It is a 1:1 ratio of Fertilome Cactus Soil and Espoma Organic Bonsai Mix. Sounds like I should add a LOT more perlite?

Will post about my east-facing window next.

Here is my east facing window (and my best window in the house). It only gets sun until about 11:30 or so since it is also under a covered porch.

I’m also about to ask about my SOH pictured here as well because they are also not doing so well

PS I saw the trick about the windows before and tried it with the last watering (waited until it seemed like they were thinner), but I honestly can’t tell if they look closed or not.

Okay, so first I’d place your variegated string of pearls where you have your non variegated string of pearls in your shelf. All the white parts of the leaves cannot photosynthesize so it doesn’t do too well when in a little bit lesser light than ones with fully green leaves. Yeah, I’d add a lot more perlite to that mix, almost want it like cereal chunky consistency. For the window that makes sense since it’s covered more, I’d try to make do with the grow light situation and just move around a few plants to give her nice and bright top light. Hmmm, I’ll try and find a picture of the slits closed and open online, as I just watered mine a few days ago and they’re really open and full.
