# Does anybody have any idea what happened to my aloe Vera? I’ve had it…

_Lagt ut av Abby den 2024-05-26_

Does anybody have any idea what happened to my aloe Vera? I’ve had it for over a year and it was doing very well, until two days ago. It started deteriorating out of seemingly nowhere?? I watered in a week ago, so I don’t think that is the issue as I also watered other plants that are doing fine. It’s very limp and smells bad, and there’s a gooey type substance in the middle? To add to the weirdness, I have a panda plant nearby that also began to die out of seemingly nowhere. However, I have a couple other plants in this area that seem to be fine. I don’t think it’s an issue with the water, does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

That looks like crown rot to me. Aka soft rot. Caused by a general unidentified bacterium: Leaves collapse to the ground as a result of decay originating in the crown. There is a water-soaked appearance to the leaves. Although the epidermis remains intact in this area, the tissue underneath is disintegrated. I don’t think you will be able to save the aloe. You can try spraying the crown and soil with 3% hydrogen peroxide straight. The stinky is the bacteria. If it appears to possibly be spreading get rid of any affected plants and aggressively treat the soil and leaves of any nearby plants. Neem oil and hydrogen peroxide are my go to choices.

Thank you!! Is this caused from overwatering? I’ve been following plantas water schedule and have never had this issue before

First - planta’s watering schedule is a guideline, not a hard rule. I water my aloe very infrequently. Like, never when planta says to. So overwatering creates the right conditions for bacteria to grow. Crown rot usually happens when the crown has water consistently put there - this is why any regular misting of plants is a bad idea (this is just info. I am not assuming you mist these plants). Only water the soil around the plant. Not the plant itself (there are a few plants that do like to have the leaves watered but they are very specific). So in short- yes, it is overwatering. Aloe tends to be pretty fine until it is not. Then it tanks really fast. They are more of a put in the right light location and ignore them plant.
