# My mini Esther ivy is not having a good time. I’ve been watering…

_Pubblicato da Jaime il 2024-10-06_

My mini Esther ivy is not having a good time. I’ve been watering based on Planta recommendations and misting every few days… but it didn’t take long before over half of her branches went dry and there were so many falling dry leaves. I had to clip all of the dead branches which is why it looks so bare. Also I often used this particular area of the pot (pictured) to test the soil dampness with my fingers, but it seems like this area of the pot has lost the most vegetation.

I don’t think I’m over watering her because the leaves are drying. Is it a watering problem?
Am I doing something wrong? Is this just seasonal?

Thank you!

i ended up overwatering my common ivy per planta’s recs :( trim rotted roots, repot, and then prune dead leaves to conserve energy for the healthy parts of the plants. it’s been about two weeks since i repotted and it’s started getting healthier again!

So does overwatering cause the leaves to get that dry and brittle? The soil does dry out. It couldn’t be underwatering?

i suppose it could be under watering too! i missed that part. mine was over watered and then got crispy once i corrected the issue so i think i just assumed. i know a lot of people recommend bottom watering in a tray to allow the plant to absorb as much water as it needs/wants. maybe try that?

That’s currently how I do my watering a with an occasional pour over. Maybe because I sometimes skip a watering for a couple days, maybe I’m just skipping too much

To echo another comment here, I just use Planta for recommendations on when to water, and for keeping track of my plant care! Definitely make sure you are watering it when it feels dry (stick your finger down into the soil or use a moisture meter with caution) and avoiding watering if it’s still too moist! Planta takes a lot of things into consideration, but plenty are missing too (like humidity level) - so don’t trust it!

Yeah I do only water when the soil is getting dry. Our humidity is pretty low so that could be contributing I guess!
