My husband bought me this Bird of paradise obviously as a rehab plant lol. I’m guessing this is root rot? Any other guesses as to what this could be before I repot?

Also, what are your best treatment plans with handling something like this?

Does the bottom of the stem feel mushy? It may just be dry where new growth has emerged, check out the roots 😊 if they are not black and mushy you should be good 😊 if there is any evidence of rot, cut away all the damaged roots and treat with hydrogen peroxide, then pot up in a well draining, airy mix 💚

My only question is have you checked out these white dots?

They look white because of the light, but it is just dust from the dirt that they use or little particles of dirt rather.

Okay, as long as it isn’t pests😅

I would check the roots—it could be fungal. They like the soil to be moist, I have mine in a self watering pot and he started growing like a weed but that makes him more susceptible to gnats, so I’ll treat with hydrogen peroxide waterings (1 part hydro to 5 parts water) to help aerate the roots and as a preventative for fungal issues, or pests every once in a while. I also use mosquito bits on top of the soil to help keep gnats away

Hmmm 🤔 are they moving? Either way whether it's pest of maybe fungal, needs a shower, give her a good rinse and clean, maybe a pest treatment to be safe and re pot her into an airy mix 😊 if you have other plants maybe keep her separate for now just to be on the safe side, and hopefully she will be a happy plant 💚

I definitely thought that it could be fungal because I do see fungus gnats, so I will be tackling that. Planning on reporting her tomorrow afternoon when I’m off. I gave her a shower and a wipe down prior to quarantining her

It's hard to see but if there is any fine webbing there it could indicate spidermites, which again, shower, pest treatment, repot and monitor her 💚
