From searching Google are the brown spots scale insets? I just noticed today and it’s only effecting 3-4 stems but noticed ants as well so expecting them to spread. What’s my best course of treatment??

Yes that is scale. If you google ‘HOW TO TREAT SCALE ON INDOOR HOUSEPLANTS’ there is a really great article that comes up from Greenery Unlimited. Basically you remove the visible scale, shower the plant and then treat plant and soil with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Good luck!
