I just got a dieffenbachia and have been watering the soil + the leaves. she looks a bit dry and I’m wondering if watering the leaves themselves as well as the soil might be my issue? or if they like their leaves being watered?

They like pretty consistent water, don’t let it dry out completely. Just 1”-2” of soil dryness. They like a decent amount of humidity so it may need added moisture. People have mixed feelings about misting, a humidifier is more effective.

I'm one of the pro-humidifiers and anti-misters... not to get political. 🫢😂

Misting is great for helping new leaves uncurl (removes friction) but it doesn't actually change the humidity AROUND the plant. It's a temporary solution to a constant problem. Once the water evaporates, you're left again with a dry leaf. So one daily mist doesn't do much in the long term.

If you buy a hygrometer, which is like $10 on Amazon (I use ThermoPro), then you can track your indoor humidity. Anything below 40% is dry, 40–60% is decent, and 60%+ is "high humidity" for those humidity loving plants. You can test it yourself with the hygrometer, but you'll likely find that both misting and pebble trays do nothing to raise that % level of the surrounding air. Humidifiers are the only way to go.

And it also depends on the plant. Some "high humidity" plants can tolerate – might not thrive, but can still exist in – the 40–60% range.
