# Is it possible the yellowing is due to too much light? The roots look…

Is it possible the yellowing is due to too much light? The roots look fine, and are constantly growing. New growth comes out fine, the oldest leaf is always turning yellow. I can’t keep more than 3 leaves at a time. Growing normal and all that. It’s under a soltech grow light, and I think it’s possible it’s receiving too much light. There is zero burning on the leaves.

Or it could be watering issues. The soil looks like there are lots of drainage material, causing most of it to absorb most of the water. Causing the plant not to get the correct amount of water it should be getting because of all the material that is absorbing the water. I see LECA, orchid bark, and some big chunks of perlite. LECA and orchid bark are big consumers of water, and I don’t really see much ‘soil’. Of course I can’t see what’s deeper in the pot, but I would definitely recommend figuring out a better potting option for soil.

This is the mix I use, it is a very chunky mix, but the soil is more settled throughout not so much on the top (just a bunch of chunks up there from tapping the soil to settle when potting) I also keep all of my plants in clear nursery pots, that way I can see the moisture levels and root growth. So I’m not sure, I don’t think it’s a watering issue but I’ll definitely keep it in mind and watch for moving over to a different soil.

Are you fertilizing? I don’t think it’s a soil issue.

#### Candace replied on 2024-04-14

I am! I use WeTheWild, but only when Planta recommends! It’s possible it got an extra fertilizer day on accident

And by that I mean the next watering, not double watering! 😅🥰

I’m not familiar with that fertilizer but I was actually wondering if it might need to be more fertilized. Can you try turning the light brightness down or raising the light further away? I share a light between these three plants plus the east facing window and it’s enough for it. My adansonii has been pushing out a new leaf every other week now and it’s ramping up I can tell.

I use that with every watering for my plants. I don’t think that’s an issue. To me this both sounds and looks like it’s just a young plant. As long as it’s the oldest leaf yellowing, it’s just diverting energy to new growth. I don’t think you can really give too much light unless it’s burning the leaves. A lot of light (as long as not bringing leaves) will just make that plant consume more water.

Absolutely beautiful! 😍 And no unfortunately it can’t be turned down, but I can move it further away! It’s drinking water normally so I’m puzzled. It is a very young plant, it was a cutting a got last summer and it’s only been potted since December! But it’s pushing out new growth (roots and leaves have been growing) constantly.

I already got a new leaf since this picture. I actually fertilize at every watering for all of my plants with cleankelp fertilizer and I use api tap water conditioner too. I make a gallon jug of water at a time. I increase the amount of fertilizer in the water during this time of year.

I’m in love, so pretty ❤️

I think you’re doing great and should keep doing what you’re doin. Until it stops popping out new growth, I wouldn’t be concerned about oldest leaf yellowing and dying off.

Okay! Thank you so much for your help! I truly appreciate it. ❤️❤️

Believe or not I add a drop of molasses to the water also in addition to what you add and all my plants has seen rapid grow. I read its feeds your plants the sugar.
