Is it a corn plant? If so you’re supposed to water once a month. with the yellow leaves and brown tips it looks like over watering

If it makes you feel any better, my corn plant is on his last legs too 🥲

Corn plants are also sensitive to lime (calcium/magnesium) in water. Lime is basic, so you can test your tap water with a PH strip (like $5 on amazon). If it's above 7 or 7.5, your tap water leans basic. Anything over 8.5 and it's considered "hard tap water." Hard tap water is notable for leaving white crust, or limescale, around faucets and coffee kettles and such.

This plant appears to be a type of Dracaena, possibly a Dracaena fragrans (also known as a Corn Plant). Here are some tips to help bring it back to health:

1\. Light: Dracaenas prefer bright, indirect light. If it’s currently in low light, try moving it closer to a window but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
2\. Watering: These plants don’t like to sit in soggy soil. Check if the soil is dry about an inch down before watering. Overwatering is a common issue and can cause root rot and browning of leaves. Make sure the pot has proper drainage.
3\. Humidity: Dracaenas appreciate higher humidity. If the air is very dry, consider misting the plant or placing a humidifier nearby, especially in winter when indoor air can be drier.
4\. Pruning: Cut off any yellow or brown leaves with sharp scissors. This will help the plant focus its energy on new growth.
5\. Soil and Potting: If the plant has been in the same pot for a while, it may benefit from repotting with fresh, well-draining potting soil. Ensure the pot is not too large for the root ball and has good drainage.
6\. Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when growth naturally slows down.
7\. Leaf Cleaning: Dust the leaves with a damp cloth to allow better light absorption and to keep the plant breathing well.

Encouraging your friend to follow these tips should help the plant recover and thrive!

What are the specific steps to water this plant properly?

To water a Dracaena (or similar houseplant) properly, follow these steps:

1\. Check Soil Moisture:
Stick your finger about 1-2 inches into the soil to check for dryness. If the soil feels dry to this depth, it’s time to water. If it feels damp, wait a few more days and check again.
2\. Water Thoroughly:
When watering, do so thoroughly until water flows out of the drainage holes. This ensures that the entire root system gets moisture. Use room-temperature water, as cold water can shock the roots.
3\. Empty Excess Water:
If your plant is in a saucer or decorative pot, be sure to empty any excess water that collects. Dracaenas are sensitive to “wet feet,” and sitting in water can lead to root rot.
4\. Frequency:
Typically, Dracaenas need watering every 2-3 weeks, depending on the indoor temperature and humidity. Allow the soil to dry out partially between waterings. In the winter months, you may need to water less frequently.
5\. Watering Technique:
Use a watering can or a cup to pour water gently around the base of the plant. Avoid splashing water on the leaves, as this can lead to leaf spots or encourage pests.

By sticking to these steps, your friend’s plant should receive just the right amount of water without risking overwatering.
