# I bought this plant from Logees about 2 months ago. It arrived…

_Postat av David den 2024-03-11_

I bought this plant from Logees about 2 months ago. It arrived healthy and I followed the instructions to replant it in 1:1 sphagnum to perlite soil. A few weeks after repotting it began to show the symptoms shown in the attached pictures.

It gets low intensity direct light from led grow lights on a 12 hour timer. I know the red leaves indicate it's still too much light so I will probably move it out from directly under the light. I am not overly concerned with the red leaves. I water with RO water when the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry. The room it's in is pretty cold averaging around 60F.

Before it started showing symptoms I had a minor case of fungus gnats that I treated with sticky paper and a soil treatment of mosquito bits. I haven't had any more problems with the gnats but not sure if the bt caused any harm to the plant.
I've tried to treat the plant after showing symptoms by first adding sulfur to lower the ph which currently sits at around 6.8. I know the sulfur will take a few months to make a noticeable change to the pH so I also added a small amount of aluminum sulfate a few days later. Then, I added a slow release, 5-5-5 organic fertilizer to the soil. I chose to use organic because I read that the plant does not take well to high salt levels. A fungus showed up a few days after adding the fertilizer (see images). A week or so later I applied a foliar iron spray to address chlorosis. I have given it a few treatments with neem oil because I thought it may be leaf spot or similar. I havent continued with the neem oil treatment.

I admit that I am just throwing solutions at the plant because I don't exactly know what is wrong with it, so any help is appreciated.

I’m just overwhelmed at all the things you’ve done and treatments applied to one plant in only 8 weeks! I’m still trying to digest it all. 🤔

I had to look up definitions:
RO - Reverse osmosis water
Chlorosis - Yellowing of normally green leaves due to a lack of chlorophyll. Occurs when a tree or shrub is lacking certain micronutrients, in many cases iron or manganese.

My questions:
\- Why did you assume it is lack of micronutrients and not a lack of sufficient light causing the yellowing?
\- Fungus gnats and fungus thrive in continuously wet soil. Some of the black spots look like mold on the leaves, a form of fungus. Red spots and yellowing on the leaves can also be a fungal infection. Overwatering can turn leaves yellow. Have you tried letting the soil dry out a lot more? That’s a very deep pot to only let 2 inches of the top soil dry out before watering. This means most of the roots are living in water.

One recommendation is ‘let it be.’ Give the plant a break to recover from the stress of changing home, getting repotted and surviving fungus gnats. I’m surprised repotting right away is a recommendation from the seller.

I recommend letting the soil dry out a lot more. Let at least 1/2 the soil dry and see if some of the leaves get greener. Then, let more soil dry out.

Fertilizer will also green up the leaves. Organic fertilizer will take a little while to soak in. Give it time. Good luck🍀🪴

Yeah each treatment was about 10 days apart and didn’t see any improvement with any of them. Yes, it was a lot for the poor plant.

-I don’t think it’s a lack of light. It’s placed 15 inches under mars hydro sp3000 @ 25%. In fact, I think it’s too close and getting too much light since these plants often prefer bright, indirect light. This is just how my current setup has to be at the moment. As for why I fertilized, I wanted more available nutrients in case it was struggling to uptake sufficient nutrients because of the high pH. And i hadn’t fertilized yet so it was due.
-Logees growing guide suggests to keep the soil evenly moist and avoid chlorinated water. They suggest not letting the soil dry out because excessive dryness will kill or damage the plant and dry roots are the greatest cause of losing the plant. The soil is 50% perlite so it drains well. I wouldn’t say it’s “sitting” in water but the soil is consistently moist. These plants are also very resistant to root disease.
-the red leaves are only on top leading me to believe it’s high levels of light. These shouldn’t be a problem.
-repotting and acclimation took 10 days

Thanks for your response I’ll let it be and try to let the soil dry out a little bit more and see if that helps things

Well, it sounds like you had valid reasons for the treatments and the lighting is enough. Plus, you are on top of the drainage. I can’t think of anything else.

What is the name of this plant? That mold on it looks scary. That’s from too much water.

definitely consider repotting in a sterile soil mixture and sterile pot. If you wanted to try something else before that, mix 1:1 water and hydrogen peroxide and water with that for your next few watering days. If that doesnt get rid of the fungus, make sure to wash the roots clean with water when repotting and spray the roots with peroxide to kill any fungus/bacteria that is left on them
