# I was gifted this African Milk Tree. It seems like it has been…

_Gepostet von stay\_pruned am 2024-06-05_

I was gifted this African Milk Tree. It seems like it has been neglected and is probably in a too-small pot. One of the growths (far right in close up) is completely dead. Several others are healthy looking in the upper regions, but dried and damaged looking lower down. One in particular looks nearly as bad as the dead one along the bottom foot or so.

Can the plants that are dead at the bottom but alive on the top be salvaged? Should I cut the bottom off and re-plant the top? It does seem to have an extensive root system, though I haven’t tried to repot yet. I’d like to preserve as much of it as possible.

This is awesome!! I would cut that one obviously dead part off - it seems like it’s on its own anyway, and then just let the rest hang out and see what happens. What an impressive specimen 🤪

Thanks! I clipped the dead stalk as suggested, and we’ll just have to see what happens next!

Most of that actually looks pretty good! I have one of these that’s been growing on my deck for 8 years or so and it loses its leaves every winter when I bring it inside; then grows new ones in the summer. Some of the trunks are brownish which I think might be sunburn? I am new to planta so I’m just lucky I haven’t killed the poor thing so far.

That sounds like good news. I gave it a nice sunny spot to hang out so we’ll see!
