# I bought this monstera a couple weeks ago. The soil was so compact…

I bought this monstera a couple weeks ago. The soil was so compact and hard I repotted it after a week. I had to soak the old soil and roots to loosen it up so I could remove the majority of it. After repotting I noticed a lot of transpiration. I had to wipe it down a couple times a day. Now I’m noticing these dark “wet” looking spots on one of the leaves. The leaf itself is not soft or mushy, just discolored. I haven’t experienced this before. Does the leaf go back to its regular coloring after a while?

The new soil is very chunky and airy. I’ve checked to make sure it’s draining properly and the soil is retaining moisture but isn’t soaking

So that looks like a type of edema. From the way you explained it, I would assume that wiping down the leaves before giving the plant a chance to naturally evaporate the water gave it a type of damage to the leaf itself and permanently changed the color. Me personally, I only wipe off my leaves about once a month in the winter and only as needed during the spring and summer just to make sure everything is dust free and able to photosynthesize as needed.

Gotcha! Thanks! I usually don’t wipe them down so often but it was so much transpiration it was making the floor damp. I should have just kept a towel under it

Understandable. It did also go from having little to no water, to suddenly the roots had a constant source of water. It will take it a few weeks to acclimate and get used to being in soil again.

it is a type of edema, but those are caused by soil media or watering issues, not wiping the leaves down. once the water has escaped the pores of the leaves it’s more than ready to drip off the plant

these are marks from excess guttation (the water that leaks during transpiration) and can be caused by underwatering (the plant suddenly uptakes more water than it needs, being used to drought), or what i suspect, moving from a dense media that can suffocate roots and prevent water uptake to a media with lots of air, that enables more efficient transpiration. it’ll take a little while to adjust to the new environment but those marks should heal as long as you’re watering properly and it gets plenty of light.

Thank you!

I started seeing discoloration like this too on some of my plants after treating with a home-brew pest spray. I wonder if it was too strong and damaged the cell structure. I don’t think I’ve been watering too often or inconsistently, but I’ll keep a closer eye out for soil issues and the like
