# Hi all! Thought I’d share something new and weird that I dealt with…

Hi all!

Thought I’d share something new and weird that I dealt with lately….

I’ve been rooting a monstera esqueleto cutting for several months now in water and stratum, and the new growth on it was this long vine that kept growing and growing but was never producing any leaves. I kept it forever thinking “well maybe it’ll start producing leaves eventually” but it got SO long that I finally thought this will be such a weird looking plant when I pot it…I have to do something.

So I started doing some research, and turns out that sometimes plants that have been used for propagating a lot or been damaged in other ways can send out these “suckers” or “runners,” which are the plant’s attempt to grow with their hormones all out of whack. The best advice I could find was to just cut off the sucker at the node where it starts, and encourage new growth from that node that will have the genetics to produce leaves correctly. Apparently some species of monstera are susceptible to this (especially adansonii, which esqueleto is related to, and monstera peru), and individual plants can be more prone to producing them than others. Anyway, I’ve never dealt with this before, especially while rooting a cutting, so thought I’d share the weirdness!

Thats so cool, youve got a lot of propogations now though (if u can propogate from the runners without it just producing more runners) ive seen this happen with pothos’ aswell!

Oh weird! Yeah, I think I’ve heard of that happening with obliqua peru. I want to say that you can try to prop the runner but there’s not as high of a chance of success? I may be wrong but I feel like there was some warning I heard once about buying obliqua nodes, that sellers might try to pawn off runner nodes at regular node prices 🤔 Something like that lol, apparently this memory has gone fuzzy

My cebu blue has been having this problem for a year! I have only been able to fix one of the vines
