# So I want to give my monstera some extra lighting because I feel it…

_Publicado por Alexandra el 2024-05-13_

So I want to give my monstera some extra lighting because I feel it isn’t getting enough. I have a grow light that is blue and red light, would that be okay to use or should I get a white grow light for it? I’m not too sure of the difference of color lighting.

i think it should be fine! im not too sure what the difference is either, but it might be that a certain color encourages flowers for certain plants?

That’s what I was thinking myself!

I would get a light meter to make sure the light you use emits enough light for a monstera. They’re inexpensive on Amazon and measure the lumens/foot candles of the light source based on the distance you place it from the plant. Monsteras prefer around 100 fc of light. In my experience the cheap blue/red lights did not provide enough light so I invested in good quality LED lights/bulbs as I grew my collection.

I agree with the recommendation for a light meter. They are 20-30ish on Amazon. There is an app called Photon that is okay in accuracy.

I don’t agree with the 100 Footcandle recommendation. That is pretty low for house plants, specifically light hungry plants like monsteras. 100 FC is 1% of full sunlight or 99% shade.

Agree again with the recommendation of a full spectrum white light that has a balance of light wavelengths in one product versus dedicated blue, red, blurple lights.

I guess I should have said that I do 100 fc for my huge mature monstera for maintenance (in outdoor humid Florida heat). For growth I think I had it at 400 fc by my south facing window inside.

Ahhh that makes a lot more sense. I bet your monsteras grow like weeds in Florida humidity haha
