# Quarantining my first Monstera Dubia! He’ll be going into my gecko…

_Posted by SrslyTomCruise on 2025-05-05_

Quarantining my first Monstera Dubia! He’ll be going into my gecko vivarium🦎 This will be my first time thoroughly cleaning and quarantining a plant so I’m a bit nervous and looking for guidance 🙏🏻
The instruction i’m going off of involves removing the soil \& soaking the whole plant in water, then soaking in a diluted bleach or peroxide bath.
I’m a bit nervous about the soaking bit, especially with the dubia’s velvety leaves, but im also terrified of infesting my viv with hitchhikers lol 🥲

I don’t do all of that soaking or repotting of soil. I typically spray all my leaves off really good with my kitchen sprayer, let leaves dry, spray the heck out of the leaves and top soil with neem oil and then isolate my plant for at least a month before putting it on my plant stand. I continue to spray plant every 5 days with the neem oil during that month of isolation.

I wouldn't do a bleach soak as it could cause some die off on tender bits, though a spray down with 1:3 peroxide dilution wouldn't be bad and pet safe. Definitely replace the soil, as it could have fertilizer that could be harmful to the gecko. And i would 100% NOT spray it with any pesticides like neem or otherwise. They are toxic to geckos and most lizards.

Thank you! I’ll give the peroxide a try!
And I appreciate the tip about neem, i just realized it would also be bad for the isopods and springtails 😭

Definitely would see a big die off with that. If i have moss im adding, I pop it in plastic bags, with most of the air out, it suffocates the invaders in a few days usually
