# Hi all. I have this adonsonii that I got a few weeks ago to put in my…

Hi all. I have this adonsonii that I got a few weeks ago to put in my chameleon cage. Only 1 leaf had 1 fenestration, but a new one just opened with 3 fenestrations. My question is why is it so much higher above the rest? Can I cut it and replant it directly in the pot or should I just leave it and other leaves will catch up to it? It does have a plant LED bar above it, all of the current leaves still look amazing, and it’s got five new shoots on the underside of the plant so I feel like it’s doing good. I just don’t like that stray leaf all by itself, but of course it has the most fenestrations so I want to keep it. I know I’ll have to bring it out of the cage soon as it will grow too big for that spot, but I will need to figure out a replacement for it.

That is a monstera deliciosa, not adansonii. As the leaves age and are exposed to adequate light more fenestrations will appear and they will grow deeper as well toward the central leaf vein.

I was going to ask if it was the correct species, but I looked at some leaf identification images earlier and it looked like adonsonii was the only one with singular fenestrations without full splits. Planta ID’d it as adonsonii based on the plant before that new tall leaf. How can you tell what it is before it has full splits?

You can tell by the veining and texture of the leaf as well as leaf shape. Deliciosa is more heart shaped and adansonii has more pronounced veining. The fenestrations on adansonii will also be retain the leaf edge so it will look thinner and more like an edge on the edges of the fenestration vs a split like on the deliciosa. I’ll share some adolescent picture of both to compare.

Ok. Thank you for that detailed explanation. I also see in general that adonsonii is smaller and grows slower it seems. So I will definitely need to move this deliciosa out of the cage and maybe replace it with an adonsonii so it stays more compact for longer? I included a picture of the full cage. It has the deliciosa, draecana rikki, umbrella tree, china doll tree, creeping fig, 2 golden pothos, 1 marble queen pothos, and 1 maidenhair fern all crammed in there :). So far everyone seems pretty happy all crammed together except the dracaena, which is getting yellow/brown lower leaves. Some of the plants are toxic, but it is for a panther chameleon who doesn’t eat plants, so they are deemed safe.
