# I just bought these for my monsteras and they should in tomorrow.…

_Geplaatst door Destinie Merwin op 2024-07-21_

I just bought these for my monsteras and they should in tomorrow. However, I’ve never given any of my plants any kind of pole or trellis so any advice on how to do it would be great! Also, the smaller monstera has some browning leaves. I’m fairly sure both of my pots are too large. However, my husband doesn’t think I should repot them again. What do you think? Should I repot them before adding the poles or leave them as is and add the poles? I don’t want to shock them too much but all of the brown spots are making me nervous. Note: it’s been 23 days since I repotted them and they’re both producing smaller leaves, slight brown spots, and my new growth isn’t unfurling all the way and it’s smaller

They are my babies and the largest in my collection. I want to make sure to have them stay that way

agree pots too big — repot them before they rot! while you repotted recently, i’d say it’s better to get it out of those. they’re likely being overwatered by water not drying out fast enough in the pots

Should I repot today then add the poles tomorrow or wait until tomorrow when the poles get in?

i don’t think one more day will be make or break for them! the poles will be easy to add after potting too! just be mindful of root placement when sticking them in ☺️

I think I’ll wait until tomorrow then so I can be aware of exactly where the roots are sitting

best of luck!! for pot sizing, monsteras like to be snug in their homes. try 1-2” wider than the root ball!

I do a “lightening repot” for this sort of situation. Make sure everything is ready, plant is appropriately watered and then lift and shift as quickly as possible. Don’t mess with the roots etc. I’ve managed to fool my monstera into thinking nothing happened more than once

be sure to locate the back and front of your plant when you repot so that you can place the support correctly. monstera have a face, the direction the leaves point and where the light should be facing, and a backside, where the aerial roots point, and where your support should be placed. also be sure not to tie any of the petioles as they’re very active during the day, only tie the main stem of the plant to the support.

Thank you so much! I’ve been super nervous about doing it wrong, but this makes a ton of sense!

happy to help! i read a really interesting paper on the monstera genus that taught me this. they’re highly active plants and will rearrange their leaves to follow the sun, which is why i mentioned not restraining the petioles (leaf stems). i highly recommend, to anyone reading who hasn’t already, watching time-lapse videos of monstera and other houseplant species online to see how active and alive they are, it’s so cool!

One thing to be mindful of is that wood stakes in wet soil can risk the wood molding or deteriorating over time. Moss poles with plastic stakes may be better long term if it’s not too late to exchange

this is why i put my climbing plants on copper trellises for the most part, moldy wood in your soil isn’t fun.

I like that “bowl of monstera” style with them peeping out like that! Very different
