# I got this monstera albo wet stick a while back. It’s only grown that…

I got this monstera albo wet stick a while back. It’s only grown that one little leaf in the past couple of months. I checked today and it hasn’t really grown any roots other than the aerial roots that were already there. It’s healthy and there isn’t any root rot. I’ve kept the soil moist and mist it fairly regularly.
Am I doing something wrong?
This is my first time propagating a monstera at all. Also is there anyway I can encourage it to start producing variegated leaves? It was a light variegation wet stick, but I was hoping it would have a little variegation on that first leaf. 😞

My Albo is in indoor potting mix, orchid bark, and extra pertile.
I fertilize once a month. It gets sun about 3 hours a day. I also water with filtered water. Like from the fridge (not cold) or water bottle.
I’ve never heard of a wet stick? Definitely going to research this.

Maybe node cutting is a more accurate term. I’ll try giving it filtered water and see if that helps. Do you think it’s okay to start giving it fertilizer? I didn’t know if it was maybe too small for that.

If you’re trying to get it to root. Root powder helps.
Moist soil will get it to root. Or putting it in water. Just change the water weekly. It may need the nutrients from the fertilizer to grow.

Wet stick cuttings of any plant are finicky at best. But we risk it because we can afford them 😂 I personally like to put ones that size in a smaller, enclosed container. I usually use a 6oz clear plastic cup or recycled soup takeout container lol. I’ll cover with plastic wrap or lid but with a small hole for some air. This allows for high humidity without being totally sealed. I prefer fluval stratum for propagation, but I recognize it’s pricey if you only have the one project prop. Do you have sphagnum or perlite?

In terms of fertilizer, SuperThrive is a good plant supplement that can be dosed very lightly for seedlings and propagations

I did have it in a little closed container, but I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to keep it in there when it put out a leaf. 😅 it did come with some sphagnum moss. I guess I’ll just put it back in there and poke a few holes in the container. Do you think I should still use the lid or some plastic wrap so it gets more light? It’s a frosted kind of container and not completely transparent. I have it under a grow lamp, but it’s a 10W full spectrum and it’s about a good one or two feet from the light.

Oh okay. Yeah I tend to use plastic wrap until about two or three leaves. I transition it by removing the wrap little by little to avoid the possibility of humidity shock. Then I upgrade to one of my smallest size pots after the roots have filled the bottom of the plastic cup. In your case, I would also go with plastic wrap, like you said so more light gets through. There’s still no roots yet though? It’s just kind of propped up on an aerial root?

Yup. I thought it was developing some at one point, but it didn’t. The previous grow light was facing upwards and not towards it so maybe that’s why? I saw someone else suggest root powder. I think I have some somewhere that I can try, though I’m not sure where I put it on it. lol.

I see. Yeah, I would make the grow light a bit more direct. I don’t use rooting powder myself, but I know many on Planta do. If you already have some on hand, go for it. I believe the bottle has instructions for best use. If it turns out you don’t have any, I personally prefer SuperThrive in water and/or keiki paste near the root node. But I wouldn’t say that’s a hard fast recommendation, I suppose actually. The main reason I avoid rooting powder is respiratory concerns. So that doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone
