Just rotated Herman. Do they like that, for light variety? Or, should I do that if they’re the kind that leans toward the light? Herman is my first Monstera…

Monsteras have a front and a back. Turning it from the light will confuse it. The back is where the aerial roots will start growing out as it matures. That is where you will eventually add support. The front of the leaves generally face away from that side naturally towards the light like your leaves already do. In nature the back sides are up against trees to anchor and climb- no light on that side. A slight turn to either side could be okay, but never away from the light.

Dizzy; turning monstera will make it dizzy.

Will that show up as yellow leaves, or something?

The soil looks very moist… is it? 🤔😬

Yep, still in what Walmart had him in. I removed the water I put in the self watering reservoir…hope to let it dry out a bit before I repot with better soil! Any soil recommendations? I have a fast draining mix I like to add perlite to for some of my green kids…

Aloha Mikel… I recently got a plant from Walmart, and had the same issue. It also had a tiny snail in the soil. I replanted it, and now it’s fine. Sounds like you already have a great plan there, and that soil combo is perfect 🤙🏼

Awesome!!! Thank you much! Any chance that Aloha was a hint you are in the gorgeous state of Hawaii!? I visited for a week years ago…can’t wait to go back!

Also, any tips on the repotting? How careful do I need to be with his roots…etc

Local girl… visit Kauai, if you haven’t yet.

I was on Oahu when I went…saw a lot of that island!

Lived there for many years. It’s a great place! Best of both worlds… with the city \& the North Shore!

#### Mikel’s Plant Posse replied on 2026-06-04

Those north shore waves knocked me down just standing on the beach! 😂

#### Monika replied on 2026-06-04

Ugh! You are brave!!! I don’t even go to those beaches anymore. Too strong.

“Monstera roots are surprisingly tough. You should be gentle but firm: carefully untangle, massage, and separate the root ball to encourage the roots to grow outward into the new soil. It is completely safe to trim away mushy, rotting roots or exceptionally long, circling root tips”.

That’s from experts… 😊

Awesome! Herman and I thank you!

### Monika commented on 2026-06-04

Ok Mikel \& Hermeee… take care!

Lastly, absolutely love all your plants. You definitely know what you are doing. I feel stupid now… LoL

Nah, I might have graduated from beginner to intermediate plant parent status, but I still have much to learn! I’m lucky to have found this community!
