# We got a GORGEOUS adansonii at a plant sale 2 falls ago. Placed it in…

We got a GORGEOUS adansonii at a plant sale 2 falls ago. Placed it in our dining room (north east room, several windows) and it THRIVED for the first year plus—ridiculous growth, super full and happy. Over the past several months (probably starting late summer) roots started to rot. Nothing had changed: was watering and fertilizing according to planta’s schedule, location was the same, no repotting (she seemed to have plenty of room). We did get a room AC last summer, but it basically just kept us from dying (no one in Seattle has AC and our summers are just getting hotter; house is rarely below 80 on a summer day even with AC). Tried moving it to a spot with more light, but it was no help. I did manage to save a couple tiny shoots and get them to grow roots—I just put them in dirt but have to admit I am not super hopeful. Anyone have ideas about what might have killed Frances? We miss her and would rather not repeat this tragedy… ☹️

We’re in Renton and I made sure to get a house with AC—I was shocked when we moved here the amount of homes that don’t!

So were you always watering on the schedule or did you use it as a reminder to physically check the soil dryness level? Planta should be used as a reminder to physically check the soil and you can snooze the water reminder for a couple days or a week if it’s still moist.

Did the pot have drainage holes? This is a must.

What kind of soil was it in? Potting soil will almost always need to be amended with at least perlite to ensure its drains quick enough. Overwatering doesn’t mean you just gave it too much water at one time, plants can be overwatered bc of things like: there are no drainage holes so the water sits, the soil is too dense and doesn’t drain quick enough so the soil stays wet too long, watering too often/on an exact schedule without checking soil dryness, not enough light so even the well draining soil is taking too long to dry. And all of that leads to rot.

All good questions/reminders. I was definitely using planta as a message to water rather than check the soil. As for the rest, we bought it from the plant sale at the Volunteer Park Conservatory, so yes to drain holes and great soil!
