# After taking care of my friend’s monstera for a few months I was so…

_Geplaatst door tamara op 2024-01-18_

After taking care of my friend’s monstera for a few months I was so amazed by how fast they grow that I got my very own from a hardware store in September! I’m honestly really proud of how far he’s come !! Since getting him I’ve seen the first leaf with fenestrations grow in and two more after that. I got him a plant stand and a post on which to climb, and I regularly rearrange leaves and retie them around the post to make sure it’s not growing too far out.

I did have a general question about caring for the plant as it gets older. Namely, when I’ve seen other monsteras they typically have a lot less leaves and they’re all pretty big. Mine has a lot of small old leaves and I was wondering if I should leave them alone or cut them off as my plant grows. Is this normal for a monstera? Do older monsteras look “cleaner” because those leaves have fallen off or because people prune them? And if I do need to prune them to make room for newer leaves, how do I do that?

Thank you! Actually all of my plants are named after Mario kart characters 😝

So they will all eventually grow larger leaves, it’s a young plant atm as at it matures they will grow larger and have a lot more holes in its leaves too! So some cut back the little leaves to send more energy to the bigger ones, but leaving them there will may help the plant. When I cut mine off it didn’t encourage more bigger leaves. And after 2 weeks they all started to grow back anyway 😂 so it’s up to you!
