# Need advice on what to do with a Monstera adansonii that is not doing…

Need advice on what to do with a Monstera adansonii that is not doing well after being planted in LECA.

Received rooted cuttings (in soil) from grower last Tuesday. Planted in LECA last Thursday. On Friday, they looked like the plant you see in the happy plant photo below.

Then I had to go out of town for two nights on Sunday. When I got back earlier today they looked like the sad and thirsty plants you see in the other picture. I immediately noticed they were out of water and gave them more, but it’s been a few hours now and there are no signs of the two wilty plants reviving.

Any advice or suggestions on what else I can do? I’ve taken one of the wilty ones out of LECA so you can see roots, if that is helpful.

As near as I can tell it’s because you didn’t thoroughly clean the dirt off of the roots. There has to be zero soil on the roots when they are planted in leca. It basically turns to mud and suffocates the plant. Not sure they will recover but if you have any chance clean off that dirt.

Yeah, they were packed in sphagnum and that stuff was not coming off unless I took the roots off with it. I’ve had success converting alocasias that still had some sphagnum on the roots, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to transfer over.

From what I know about Monsteras so far and working with my monsteras; I’ve come to learn that Acclimation is a hugggeee part of keeping these plants alive especially when you are buying them as rooted plants already,, Usually the rule of thumb is to leave the plant be for at least 2-3 weeks before doing any sort of repotting unless it needs an immediate rehabbing. So the transitioning into Lecca only 2 days after receiving them might’ve put them into shock :( and when it comes to the root picture, if it was spagnum moss on the roots originally (and not soil) then they likely didn’t rot from that. Did you spray the roots with a hydrogen peroxide solution before putting them in the Lecca?
When it comes to what you should do now; I suggest that you cut off any rot you can see/feel with sterilized clippers and then dip or spray with hydrogen peroxide solution and repot in your medium of choice again but this time try using distilled water and if you are going to water prop, put a airstone in there as well! Sorry for the long comment but hope this helps! :) Good luck post updates!

UPDATE: I can’t tell for sure, but it seems like it might have just been the lack of water and I needed to be more patient. By the next morning the wilted cutting that I had NOT uprooted was all perky again and looked fine.

The one I did uproot (and then replanted in a new pot just to be extra careful) is still kind of hobbling along. I think the uprooting may have done more harm than good.
