# I absolutely love the variety in the leaves of my Maranta. It’s so…

_Gepostet von suddenlyaplantperson am 2025-03-06_

I absolutely love the variety in the leaves of my Maranta. It’s so beautiful. I got it as my first rescue project from the grocery store and it was just overall kind of sad. Yellow leaves, brown spots, and just looked really droopy. It still has those brown spots from the grocery store (It doesn’t seem to be negatively impacting the plant and the browning is on the largest leaves of the plant and I don’t really want to cut them off).

But going back to the leaf variation, does anyone know why this happens? I have more photos but I can’t include anymore attachments in the post so I’ll put them in the comments.

And quick side note… I’m cleaning the leaves today lol. Just ignore the dust in the photos 😂

Within a variety I'm sure the variations are random and caused by variations in pigmentation. Just like humans, plants have variations in their DNA that cause these color differences.

Also, the old leaves will get ugly and eventually die. My Miranta which is 15 years or more old gets a haircut every winter. All the old ugly leaves go and fresh leaves come from the soil.

How much of the plant do you cut off?

Everything, down to an inch or two. But watch out there may be fresh growth coming underneath.
