What a beautiful aglaonema! Are you new to this type of plant, or looking for care tips for it?

This is a first for me on this type. I don’t always have the best luck with plants so I’m hoping I don’t kill it. The place he got it said they are easy to care for, so that’s good.

They are pretty easy care plants as long as they’re potted in a well-draining mix 😊
\- I’ve used Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix or Espoma’s Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix with some added perlite and orchid bark for drainage. Please avoid Miracle Grow’s soil for this one, especially if you live in a hotter or more humid environment in the summertime; as it isn’t well-draining and can quickly lead to overwatering and root rot in warm conditions. A lot of folks here swear by FoxFarm as well in terms of soil, but I like recommending Espoma as it’s a cheaper alternative to Miracle that’s similar in price but much higher quality.
\- When it comes to repotting, opt for a pot no more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the width of the plant’s root ball. Aglaonemas enjoy being more snug in their pots and even getting a little rootbound between repottings. It also lowers the chance of rot or overwatering if they’re not sitting in a lot of excess soil. If you’re a frequent overwaterer, opt for a terracotta pot with at least one large drainage hole, but I’d usually recommend a simple plastic pot with multiple drainage holes. I wouldn’t recommend glazed ceramic pots as they’re better suited for plants to don’t want to completely dry out between watering and need a pot that will hold extra moisture in if they love high humidity. I wouldn’t recommend a self-watering pot either if you’re new to them.
\- An easy way to check if the soil is dry enough is to stick a bamboo/barbecue skewer all the way to the bottom of the soil, then taking it out. If the soil sticks to it, wait at least 2 days, then check again. If the skewer comes out clean and dry, with nothing sticking to it, it should be safe to water. I use Planta more like a scheduled timer to check if the soil is dry enough to water rather than a surefire schedule to water it every time. You can change your plant’s individual settings to a “custom watering schedule” to fit how often you’re currently watering them, and change it any time to adjust to your plant’s specific drying habits.
\- Misting and pebble trays don’t really increase humidity for plants, and misting can damage some plants. A top-filling humidifier is much more effective for humidity-loving houseplants.
\- A great way to water it while keeping their leaves dry is to place the plant into a bowl/container with water for 10-20 minutes, then take it out to drain in a sink or dry over a terracotta saucer. This is called bottom-watering. It helps lower the chances of attracting pests to moist top soil, prevent overwatering, and strengthens the root system. You can top-water or bottom-water this plant, but I like to add that for anyone who likes bottom-watering their plants to lower the risk of attracting fungus gnats.
\- In terms of lighting, aglaonema do well in lower light conditions (i.e. spots that only receive 2-4 hours of sunlight), but lower light doesn’t mean no light. They need to be within 1ft of a light source, regardless of the brightness of the window. Mine enjoyed a north-facing window that only got 2-4 hours of sunlight, but it was also right in the windowsill to soak up as much light as possible. If brighter lighting, it doesn’t have to right in the windowsill, but at least within 1ft of one. If you want to place it somewhere brighter, gradually expose it to brighter light by gradually moving it closer and closer to a brighter light source over the span of a few weeks.
\- Their sap is toxic, as well as their flowers. If you have cats, dogs, or any curious little ones, you might want to move it somewhere with a closing door to keep it away from them. Their flowers produce the most of this sap, so many cut the flowers off before they bloom to lower the risk of contact with the sap for pets and kids, as well as reserve the energy towards new foliage rather than the flower. Some folks aren’t too into the look of the flower. Not everyone reacts poorly to the sap, but some have described the skin irritation to it as something akin to feeling like broken fiberglass. I never had such a reaction with mine, but I like to err on the side of caution and recommend wearing gloves when pruning or deadheading the flowers just in case.
