Does this ponytail palm need repotting? If so should I wait until winter is over to do it? I've also noticed a bit of white on the root - what causes this? Cheers!

I do not know much about ponytail palms but it looks like the roots have definitely grown well out of the pot, so I’d suggest repotting. However I wouldn’t say it is very urgent unless you’re noticing some negative effects of it being root bound! It honestly looks pretty happy so I’d not be terribly concerned about repotting it right now!

The drying edges and wrapped root conditions show the plant needs a bigger pot. The soil looks spent. The plant will benefit from a repot. No need to wait.

Also, it appears the roots have been sitting in water. The outer pot probably has no drain holes or has little drainage leading to overwatering and damaged leaves. It’s important to let the plant completely drain before putting it back into a cachepot. Ponytail palms store water in their trunks. It’s better to underwater than over water.

How can I tell when the soil is "spent"?
