Step 1: Check for restrictions
Regulations on shipping plants between states are designed to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases.
Federal regulations: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits the shipping of certain plants or those from quarantined areas. Use the USDA database to confirm your plant is not restricted.
Texas state regulations: Texas specifically prohibits the import of all citrus plants and places restrictions on some palm species. If you are shipping a commercially sold plant, a phytosanitary certificate from the origin state's department of agriculture may be required.
Step 2: Prepare the plant for mailing
Proper preparation ensures the plant remains healthy during transit.
Water and prune: A day or two before shipping, water the plant well so the soil is moist but not soggy. Prune off any dead or damaged leaves and stems.
Remove from pot: For most plants, shipping "bare root" is recommended to reduce weight and cost. Gently remove the plant from its pot, shake off any excess dirt, and inspect for pests or diseases.
Wrap the roots: Wrap the root ball in moist paper towels or newspaper, and then enclose it in a plastic bag to keep moisture in and soil contained.
Secure foliage: For delicate leaves or long stems, you can wrap them loosely in newspaper or bubble wrap to prevent breakage.
Step 3: Package the plant for shipping
Use sturdy materials to protect the plant from damage.
Choose a box: Use a strong, corrugated cardboard box. Make sure it is tall enough that the plant isn't bent or crushed.
Provide airflow: Poke several small holes in the sides of the box to ensure proper ventilation.
Pad the plant: Use packing peanuts, shredded paper, or crumpled newspaper to fill any empty space and prevent the plant from shifting during transit. For cacti or other spiny plants, use puncture-proof packaging.
Add cushioning: Place extra padding around the foliage to protect fragile leaves and stems.
Step 4: Ship the package
Select the fastest shipping option to minimize the plant's time in transit.
Choose a carrier: USPS, FedEx, and UPS all offer services for shipping live plants. For the fastest delivery, consider USPS Priority Mail Express or FedEx/UPS overnight services.
Ship on the right day: To avoid having your plant sit in a warehouse over a weekend, ship it early in the week, ideally on a Monday or Tuesday.
Label the box: Clearly label the box on multiple sides with large, waterproof stickers or a permanent marker. Write "LIVE PLANTS," "FRAGILE," and "THIS SIDE UP" to ensure proper handling.

Let me know what I can do to help if you decide.❤️🙏🏽
