# Hello y’all!! soooo I’ve got a question. And tbh I’m really confused…

Hello y’all!!

soooo I’ve got a question.
And tbh I’m really confused
So I have had this spider plant for 4yrs now and um… I just found out they are not supposed to be lime green. I ownmany different types of spider plants, I have solid green ones, Bonnie’s, and the normal one with the white stripes(I’m blanking on the name sorry)
And anyway I’ve had this lime green one the longest. Was actually my first plant. I went and googled why it was lime green and google is trying to tell me that it’s sick.
I was given this plant lime green. It’s one of my healthiest plants ( if you ignore that my brothers attacked a few leaves)
I’m fairly certain that it’s a solid green spider since that’s what the person told me when it was given to me.
Is this like some kind of mutation????

I have a full green spider plant the goes through color changes (lime to grass to muted)! Is it just the picture, or is there a shoot with the beginnings of pups on it in the first picture? I’d say it’s a spider plant, but I’m no expert.

It is indeed a spider plant

It has like babies ig a lot

definitely a spider plant. i have a 30+ year old green spider that has given me hundreds of babies. some of them are darker green and others are lighter green like in your photo, though all have come from the same plant. the coloration i think has to do with the lighting. while spider plants are super common overall, solid green ones are a bit rare. your plant will be healthier and darker green if it gets more light. the skinny floppy leaves mean your plant isn’t getting enough sun

Oh
I thought it was getting a lot of light. I’m also pretty sure the floppy leaves are from when my younger brothers attacked it…

is it getting 6-8 hours of direct sunlight or is it 6-8 hours under a grow light? some of mine are near but not directly under a strong grow light for 12 hours a day and the leaves are still thin as if it’s in slight shade. under and overwatering can also cause the leaves to get floppy. i would also recommend trimming the one twisted leaf if you can’t readjust it

I give the plants I really want to look good 16hours of grow lights a day

#### snazzy man respondió el 2024-02-24

Mine are directly under a grow light

Does the pot have drain holes? I saw the fungus gnat yellow sticky trap in one photo. My spider plants cango lighter green under stress.

Does it get fertilizer at least once a month in winter and every two weeks in summer? That will make it go darker.

My spider plants like very bright light at least 8 hours a day. They also like the soil to dry out before watering.

it does not have drainage holes. But I have rocks at the bottom. There is a gnat catcher in it because my room is infested at the moment. I bought a sago palm with a self watering pot from Lowe’s. The gnats came with that plant.

I would get some BTI drops. they’re a bacteria that kills the larvae in the soil. I have over 50 plants and zero gnats using those drops. one or two drops per gallon of water and use every single time you water every single plant. and I have a plug-in insect catcher nearby for any adults that make it inside my house.

it seems like sunny found the problem. lack of drainage is a slow death sentence for most plants. while rocks at the bottom of the pot is commonly recommended to help drainage, it actually impedes drainage in the pot. look into perched water tables in potted plants for more information. spider plants will really struggle to survive with no drainage since they are semi-succulent epiphytes— they need infrequent watering and lots of airflow to thrive. i plant most of mine in terracotta pots so the soil dries out quickly between waterings. the soil should be completely dry before watering again

### Evil Plant Dad comentó el 2024-02-24

I had a monstera in a 2inch pot that turned lime green when it was rootbound and couldn’t grow any more leaves

### Sunny comentó el 2024-02-24

Lots of good advice!
\- Check for root bound per Evil Plant Father. Spider plants are known to clog a pot based on their thick finger like roots.
\- Definitely, use BTi (Mosquito Bits or similar) with every watering on ALL plants to eradicate pests per Tigerlilly. I have 140+ plants and no infestations, no yellow stickies.
\- Definitely, change out the pot to one with drainage per Plant Father. It will eventually die from root rot. The roots will eventually grow into the water reservoir. Let the soil completely dry before watering. Fertilize regularly. The plant will darken.
