# RIP 🪦 Lisa 🙁 I got Lisa about 1 year ago. A beautiful dracaena…

RIP 🪦 Lisa 🙁

I got Lisa about 1 year ago. A beautiful dracaena Lisa. It was my first and favorite plant. I loved her. As a first time plant mom, there was so much I didn’t know about plants, and I learned the hard way.

Yesterday I declared death officially. I had been hanging on to her with the hope she would get better. But I checked her roots, and she was very dead, root rot at the deepest level, squishy roots. I learned what root rot is now!

A few things I learned along the way:

\- Watering: I was watering my dracaena almost every week. During the first 6 months. She was fine, because it was summer/fall. During winter, I kept watering the same way… so I obviously gave her too much water, so she got sick.

\- Repotting: Not knowing what I was doing, I attempted to repot her in february of this year. Did everything wrong, got rid of very healthy roots and messed the whole thing up… shouldve done the research before and not after. Lesson learned.

\- Soil: my third mistake, and probably what ended up killing Lisa, using normal soil potting mix, and not adding substrates to increase drainage. So even with new soil, my plant was holding a ton of water, on top of its already damanged rooting system, which I messed up haha.

Nothing I did helped my plant get better, instead everything I attempted made it worse.

But, messing up in every way… I learned a ton of how to do things right… so next time, it won’t happen again. Found this amazing youtube channel called the Swedish Plant guys, and boy… they know it all!

Sharing this hear for all those new plant moms and dads, save your plants by not doing everything wrong like I did. Im rooting for you!

Before and after pics below 🥲🥲

RIP Lisa 😞

Super sad and bummed about it, cause I would have been able to prevent all of this from happening, but you live, you learn! Right??

Killing plants is part of the learning curve - it’s sounds like you’re making the most of the loss and will be a better plant keeper for it! 🎉

I learned a lot about roots from my first major loss. I had a gorgeous, thriving mamey croton. It was 4” when I bought it. Less than two years later it was 2 feet tall and LUSH. I noticed it raising itself up out of its pot. So I pulled it out and found a solid inch of bare white root at the bottom of the root ball. NO soil!

What I should have done was gotten a larger pot and some fresh soil.

What I did instead…I cut those damn roots clean off 😅

It sloooowly dropped leaves and died over the next year until I finally called it a loss. ☠️🪦

Omgshhhh! Do you have any pictures?? From 4 inch to 2 feet in 2 years??? Wow. That gives me hope! I thought plants took way longer to grow! So it was root bound. See all of these new terms Ive been learning precisely from my loss. It hurts!!! We kinda feel attached to the plants… i was obsessed about mine for months.

So sorry for your plant! She looked gorgeous. My first was a Calathea concinna prayer plant who died last year from what I presumed to be low humidity. Last week I bought an orbifolia and am giving prayer plants a second shot with all my new plant knowledge (and new humidifier!) She has definitely taught you valuable skills that you can use to keep your other plants thriving :)

I know!!! I messed up so much, but learned so much in the way. My next plants have a better chance at survival hahah. So fingers crossed!🤞🏻 i got a new Lisa to replace my first one, its not nearly as pretty… but, Im happy again ahhha

You'll definitely get her there 😄

I have a sad looking calathea I’ve been told it is, a zebra prayer plant. Brown curling edges to the leaves. Could be no humidity and hard water. Not sure if she will survive.

They’re really tough! Rain water is a good option (cheaper than distilled) if you can collect where you live, or fish tank water if you have a tank. A really chunky mix with bark and coco help with the right water levels. Good luck!

Plants teach us some great lessons.

I put a palm tree in a dark corner, not realizing at the time that plants need light to survive. And A LOT of light for a palm.

Same with 3 air plants hanging on the wall, 10 feet from an already low light window.

And others along the way.

The benefits: learned to implement lovely growth for my hoya, zz, and pothos.

Oh, i forgot all of the lessons learned on light with my other plants!! Its so many variables, that make it so freaking hard to keep them alive at times 😂😂

Thanks for sharing. I will add that new plant owners should start with smaller plants. The larger plants are tempting. They look perfect in the nursery or under fluorescent lights in office buildings or stores. Most home environments can’t mimic the conditions. It’s better to grow from a smaller plant that acclimates to the home. Plus, the blow is a lot less for me when a small 4” plant dies versus my large expensive dream plant. I can just try again after a short mourning period. Trial and error learning!😁

Rip Lisa 🪦 and thanks for the tips—mistakes help us grow. I’ve gone through about 5 succulents because of that, currently in between plants rn
