# I got lucky and bought this plant for the flower buds. I found out…

_Geplaatst door Sunny op 2023-07-20_

I got lucky and bought this plant for the flower buds. I found out later it was red turmeric (curcuma). It’s almost carefree. The flowers are long lasting. It goes dormant when the temperature drops, losing all of the leaves. I take the pot inside to avoid freezing weather. The plant revives in spring. It grows several feet when planted in the ground. All of it is used in cooking and for medicinal purposes. I’ve successfully grown the yellow variety sold in grocery stores.

How do you make turmeric out of that?

Grow them in a deeper and wider container like a whiskey barrel or in the ground. Harvest in 8-9 months, dry in dehydrator or low temp oven. Then, grind in a food processor or blender. The site Homesteadandchill has a complete article titled How to Grow Turmeric in Containers, in Any Zone! See the attached picture of the their harvest.
