Looking to plant some new trees in my tree-less, super sunny backyard for Earth day.  
Any dog friendly recommendations? Zone 10a

Also, is it wise to plant this late into spring?…

I would suggest a Nuccio’s gem camellia. It’s more of a bush than a tree, but they grow pretty big. My mom has one that is 9-10 feet tall. They’ve got lots of shade under them, and our dogs like to lay under them during the summer. They also have really pretty white flowers that bloom in the winter.
