# My dendroium Sharry Baby’s roots are growing well, which is great,…

_Posted by Amy on 2025-10-06_

My dendroium Sharry Baby’s roots are growing well, which is great, but some of them are growing out of the holes in the pots. They turn brown at the tips and then look like they dry or die. Should I be concerned? The roots will have to be cut when it’s time to repot. Media is wet because I just finished watering.

As long as it has plenty of roots it should be fine, but it may be getting close to repotting time

My oncidiums freely toss out roots all over the place. They are very unruly. Some die back shouldn’t be an issue.

By the way, you have an oncidium sharry baby. You can tell because of the egg shaped pseudobulb. Dendrobiums have “canes”. Care is a little different. They don’t want quite as much light and are a tad thirstier.

Thank you for the plant correction. I knew I had a Sharry baby because that’s what the plant tag states, but I got the type of orchid mixed up. The oncidium doesn’t need as much light but a bit more water. Is that correct?
I noticed these roots don’t seem to turn green after watering like the phalenopsis.
But they keep growing so that’s good

In my experience, oncidiums appreciate more frequent waterings than dendrobiums. That being said, watch your plant. The pseudobulb of a well hydrated plant should be smooth. Slight wrinkling is fine but lets you know you shouldn’t go longer between waterings.

If you see accordion pleating in the leaves or significant wrinkling, your plant is crying out for water. That can be due to infrequent water, blooming stress or a root issue.

Regarding light, oncidiums don’t need as much light as dendrobiums. Your sharry baby can handle some early morning ing sun but be careful. The thinner leaves can burn. I have mine in an east window. It gets an hour or two of early morning sun and then is shaded by a large crepe myrtle.

Plant getting enough sun will be lighter green in color. Dark green indicates too little light. Red tinges means you are close to too much light.
