# Meet J, Jr. I just received the plant after ordering online. Very…

_Posted by MK on 2024-03-12_

Meet J, Jr. I just received the plant after ordering online. Very impressed w/ quality. Unfortunately, I killed J, Sr. because I did not cover to allow roots to grow a bit as I received unpotted. In the past I have been very successful with the plants.
(This is for my daughter fiancé who apparently has been sneakily taking pieces of leaves, etc. from me for years😊).
I bought him (the real J) a blue Monet glazed A.V. Pot. (Apparently the flowers on this plant are blue. I see purple.)
So, how and when do I transplant given this plant is 4” tall. (J’s birthday is end of March.) I did add a bit of water in tray yesterday. I do have orchid soil.
Sorry so long and advise if I’m in wrong forum. Thank you so much!

so thoughtful. but before you do that, does this pot have drainage holes?

The small (store) pot has drainage holes. The new pot does not have drainage holes, however, it is an African violet pot which draws the water up through the unglazed bottom half of the top section. Forgive me if you are already aware.

no, i actually haven’t heard of it! that’s cool. i’ll let someone else give advice here since i’m unsure abt this pot type. good luck!

Is that a ludisia of some kind? A jewel orchid? I don’t know that much about this type, but would be interested in learning more. I believe they take somewhat different care than most orchids, even the terrestrial ones that would be the closest related. The one thing I do remember is that they tend to grow more horizontally than vertically. So, I suspect that that cutie may outgrow that pretty pot fairly quickly.

Here’s an updated pic of J,Jr. Doing well. New pot is deep so should last awhile. Only adding water to bottom pot.
I saw a note to dump water out after the top is wet but I’ve never done that before and I’ve had good luck.
