# I’m trying a new way of potting my ‘Lemon Heart’ Oncidium. The newest…

I’m trying a new way of potting my ‘Lemon Heart’ Oncidium.
The newest bulbs seem to grow vertically or climb up and potting it in traditional round orchid pot buried all the old bulbs and left the new bulbs “floating”, so I’ve repotted the plant on it’s side. I couldn’t find a long and narrow planter at my local big box store but did find a clear refrigerator storage containers. I got nested containers. The inside container has slots and holes; I think it’s supposed to be a colander. The outside container holds the colander. I’ve planted the orchid in the colander and added clay pebbles to the outside container so there’s some airflow and to help me lift out the inside container when it’s time to water. It’s a little different but it’s an experiment. Plus side, I can see the roots and assess the root health. Wish my plant luck 🍀

Nice idea. If it keeps trying to climb in the future, you could try mounting it low on a vertical bit of cork, though it'd probably need to be watered more often. Also it might be climbing because of where you put it in the pot; you've given a lot of space the the oldest bulbs and almost no runway for the young bulbs to grow into; if it was like that in its old pot, it'd have nowhere to grow but up.

It was as previously in a regular plastic plant pot with the oldest bulb buried in bark chips and the new bulb “floating” multiple inches above the pot. Maybe I’ll repot it and try to move the old bulb closer to the horizontal pot edge, but it had a lot of roots mass and I didn’t want to smash them.

I have one with a similar growth pattern. I think there are some hybrids just prone to this ‘climbing’. This is an interesting solution, I look forward to an update!
