As long as you’re not seeing any rot come up from the bottom of the axis, (at the base of the orchid,) it is just part of a phalaenopsis’s natural life cycle. They will drop lower leaves, and grow new ones from the crown. One per year is not unusual at all. If you are very concerned that there’s a potential problem, and it’s time for a re-pot, you can cut away any dead roots and put it in fresh medium. I also like to recommend a pot with slits or ventilation holes as roots of orchids like to dry out between waterings and need some air as much as they need water.
