# Best photo I have of it right now. Will it survive? I rescued it from…

Best photo I have of it right now. Will it survive? I rescued it from Walmart- they don’t water any of the succulents (at least at my Walmart, overheard a garden center worker tell another they don’t water them at all). I gave it new bark and trimmed the dead roots. I knew the plastic clear pot came out of the decorative one but after a few weeks, I tried to go water it again and pull out the clear pot from decorative one but it wouldn’t come out. I felt confused but figured, “hmm, maybe it never did coke out?” So a week goes by, I decided to check it again. The pot came out and I felt dumb. Anyway, there was even more root rot ofc so I just trimmed all the dead ones off. There’s only three roots left and they’re all really short (like 1-2”). I decided after that, I’d make it a water culture orchid. The leaves when I bought her back in late April, and even to now, they’re dark green with like greenish black spots over the leaves (worse in person than what photo shows). Makes me wonder if the leaves are dying off too?

I would clean with a peroxide/water solution to sterilize and then wrap her is lightly damp sphagnum moss. Keep it moist but not saturated maybe water with some cinnamon tea every other time…

I water culture all of my orchids but I have a rescue in moss recovering myself. Plants with Krystal on YouTube… she has some great vids on orchid rescue and water culture as well as raising in medium

Be patient. They take time to bounce back. I would also suggest small bark with some moss to keep it slightly moist and fertilizer weakly weekly.
If you’re going to continue to try water culture, ensure that the crown isn’t in water and be aware cinnamon is a drying agent. I only use cinnamon on flower spikes after they’re cut. Good Luck! 😊

I grow all my orchids bare root and have rescued a couple with no roots after being waterlogged in a store.

Can you clarify? This doesn’t look bare rooted to me. Do you just keep it in the leca /sphagnum mix as it’s recovering? Then what does your bare rooted set up look like?

#### Heather replied on 2025-05-20

It actually is bare root. The leca is covered with a small amount of moss. And then water is added to about an inch below the top of the leca. The plant sits on TOP of the moss. The water is there to help maintain humidity. I mist the roots daily and the moss holds a small amount of water without letting it get root rot or waterlogged.

Here is a different plant growing the same way.
