So, I have 2 cuttings from a Golden Pothos that have been soaking in water for a couple of months without any roots growing. Both cuttings seem happy and are growing leaves but no roots.
Do I just try planting them and hope they live or give up?

My golden pothos took forever to grow roots like 6th months , is there nodes?

#### Buckolena replied on 2026-06-24

Yes there are nodes in a couple of places where the roots would normally grow but nothing more than the nodes. No roots actually growing.

I agree with Laura your best bet is adding prop drops

Thirding the rooting drops!! Really seems to help

Any recommendations?

I wouldn’t pot up until some roots develop — whatever is causing it to take so long while in water will be worsened by soil that potentially dries out.

You may have luck by adding prop drops to the water and always be sure the nodes stay submerged!

What prop drops would you recommend?
I’ve never used those before.

I’ve used these with nearly a perfect success rate, genuinely!

Happy to help, best of luck!

Pothos generally produce a lot of rooting hormones on their own but if you change the water too much, or have too much minerals the hormones tend not to build up enough to cause rooting. The more pothos clippings you put in (with nodes attached) the more hormones you’ll accumulate and the faster they’ll start to form roots. If you have a fish tank it’s even better to propagate there as the plant will start feeding from the nutrients suspended in the water and help it even more.

I got around 11 golden Pothos props from a friends ~6 months ago and all but one has grown roots and for the most part shoots. I’ve been really annoyed with that one and was going to toss it out for being mean, but I’m finna stick it in my fish tank now

This pothos cutting from my normal golden pothos has been there for a week, that African violet cutting has been there 3 or so. The violet started getting roots halfway up the stem (stem is like 6”) after only 3 days. Pothos already has 2 roots starting also about halfway up with a similar length stem.

I also have like 9 different clippings fully established plants sitting in this fish tanks filter. Ignore the brown nasty looking water, we are leaving the algae in the back wall for our shrimp to graze between feeding and the brown water is just stained with tannins (on purpose)
