# I just started my first attempt at orchid breeding! Hand pollinating…

_Posted by Waspinator on 2026-02-06_

I just started my first attempt at orchid breeding!

Hand pollinating is a bit tricky with the tiny pollen, but it was straightforward on what to do. I crossed these both ways in terms of pollen vs seed parents. The purple one is an average sized phal and the red one is a mini. In about 4 months, I should get seed pods, and then the real challenge begins

(If anyone wants orchids like these two, I found both at meijer)

Cool! You can expect the blooms on it to last really well

Very cool! Orchids intimidate me, let alone to do what you're doing, best of luck and keep us posted.

Update: I failed to get seeds from either one. The purple one's flowers died back, so it'll have to wait till next bloom for its next breeding. The little red one still had a few flowers, so my second attempt is breeding that one to itself. I think what I did wrong was putting pollen in to the same flowers that I was taking pollen from; this time I put the pollen into a flower that I didn't take pollen out of, and the one that provided pollen is definitely dying back immediately while the pollen recipient is fine. If that doesn't work, I do have three other phals, so I can just try a different cross while I wait for these two to bloom again.
