# hello fellow propagators, so I make my moss poles from chicken wire,…

_Posted by lilia on 2026-07-13_

hello fellow propagators, so I make my moss poles from chicken wire, and zip ties making it hard to add onto it when my plants begin to grow… I have a philodendron that I would like to possibly propagate and need some advice on how to do it. Would it have a successful propagation if I cut from #1 or #2? Or should I not cut at all? I’m open to all suggestions 🙂

I could be wrong, but from what I see in your photo, I would say cutting #2 for rooting growth reasons.

Next time you build a moss pole like that. Place a Small PVC pipe through the center. Then you could build a second moss pole and run a long garden stake through the pipe to connect the 2, to extend the pole. Then zip tie around where the 2 fit together. Just a suggestion for future builds. Love the DIY moss poles though😁

On second though, you could probably, carefully slip a garden stake through that existing pole and build a new one to slide right on top.

Such a good suggestion!! I’ll definitely be doing that from now on.

I would definitely cut the first few nodes from the top. And you can definitely cut in between where those nodes are. So your lines that you have marked on there should be fine. I have a big philodendron, and I did that myself, and they propagated very nicely. I cut probably the first five sections of nodes.

Did you propagate in water or soil? I’m wondering if it would do good in water . I always have the best luck that way.

I’ve always done mine in water. And then when I feel like there is enough roots then I will put it in soil. I’ve also done moss and I’ve kept that moist cause sometimes the roots need to be a little firm so when you plant it the water roots don’t break off. So sometimes you can still do moss and it’s still technically water propagation in my world. I hope that makes sense.

I have propagated it in water and I see the roots coming through 🤞🏽

Yeah!!!

If you need to, you can always put it in moss or coco coir fibers. I’m personally doing a lot more propagations in that after they have some roots before I put them in an actual soil.
