# Uh oh! I think my echeveria prop might be rotting. Can anyone confirm…

Uh oh! I think my echeveria prop might be rotting. Can anyone confirm or is this normal how it looks? I’ve still not gotten a rosette and it’s been about 7 months old. The cracks slowly started developing as did its curve so I’m not sure what I did wrong. It has roots and is well rooted just not little bulb to say it’s going to start sprouting.

Looks like it’s too wet. With those, they don’t need as much water as a regular cut plant. They just start sprouting roots and growing into soil… I don’t water them any more than I do their parents.

It does look wet doesn’t it? I’m using a new to me cactus mixture and it just always seems so dark like that. I only bottom water it when it’s fully dried out tho.

Do you think this prop has rotted tho? It’s the first time I’ve ever proped a succulent so I’m unsure of the process.

It does look like it’s rotting. Not sure if it has any roots but if it’s yellowing or mushy without a baby rosette forming it’s likely that it is. Propagating succulent leaves that can be propagated is really easy. You don’t need to bury the broken end or water it. You can lay or drop the leaf on top of soil or anything and it will grow roots. Once the roots grow you can mist the roots or give it a few drops of water.

Oh ok yea I was bottom watering it from time to time once it grew roots. I was following planta’s advice on watering (checking first) but I’ll try your method of just giving it a few drops of water once the roots come out instead of bottom watering. I thought the pot was too big but it was such a big leaf I didn’t have a choice

Yea always check first but bottom watering will make the whole thing wet and the little tiny baby roots can’t drink it all up. Try giving only enough water to wet the roots and then gradually increase it. Hope this will help and good luck with your next prop 🌱

leaf props are weird like that, some of them take and some of them don't. if you haven't gotten a rosette, you're probably not going to get one from this leaf. this is what they look like when the mother leaf is becoming spent and doesn't have much energy left to feed the rosette. you should be getting roots as soon as 2 months! i think she's done for.

Thanks for confirming. I tossed her into the backyard for compositing she was kinda squishy. I can’t recall how long it took to get roots but it was def inside 2months. I’ll try Ali’s suggestion and just put it on the soil and wait to get roots then just mist/eye dropper it instead of bottom watering it.
