# Hey guys! I am trying to propagate my snake plant. I did cut off one…

_Posted by Mari on 2025-07-03_

Hey guys!
I am trying to propagate my snake plant. I did cut off one of the leaves and did the v cut in the bottom of the leaf. I put it in water and change it regularly. Yet the leaf is becoming yellow and quite transparent, no sign of roots. What did I do wrong? I would love to try again but I don’t want to cut my plant without knowing what is the matter.

It looks like it is rotting. I’ve never propped a snake plant, so hopefully someone with more experience speaks up!

It looks like it might be kind of squished in that jar. That could be the reason it’s rotting

Following as I’ve tried propagating them and failed countless times and never succeeded. 😔😭

I have never done them in water but just petting the leaf in soil has worked

Do you also cut in a v shape?

#### Plantmommie03 replied on 2025-07-03

Nope just stuck em in the dirt

The trick is to let the cut callous over for a day or two before putting it in water. If you put a fresh cut in water it will rot, unfortunately.

With snake plants the process is very slow-going but just trust the process and eventually you’ll get roots and maybe even pups
