# Propagation friends! For those of you that really get off on good…

Propagation friends! For those of you that really get off on good root development. I had this Banyan Rot leaf in water for a long time. Then one poke of a root, then a few, then holy explosion. I’m going to plant now but don’t k ow what to expect. Will the leaf start growing taller or will a new baby tree start to shoot up in front of the leaf, the way snake props do? How long til I have a little tree?

Unfortunately, this will only be a leaf and won’t grow into a full plant. I’m sorry 😢

What about my zz, then. Been propping this for months! Can it grow a plant?

Yes it will. I have many propagations from stem with Zz that have been potted and doing well. Just wait for a nice bulbous tuber to form and let those roots grow out a bit more.

RIGHT! I’ve never seen just a leaf grow roots, and I’ve never looked into it so it’s possible that it might grow a stem. I’m excited to see how this turns out for you!

That is a beautiful looking root system. I’ve never seen a banyan propagated this way but I’d be interested to see an update if it grows a new stem or not. Maybe I will try experiment with with you. The leaf will not get any bigger and sometimes a leaf can grow roots and stay that way.

Have you ever seen a mature tree in its natural state?  
Fun fact: On Guam, the Banyan tree is a medicinal, giant spirit tree referred to as the Nunu tree. The root system is extraordinary!

This is my mature banyan. Something is wrong with its bottom nodes. I have notched and applied keiki paste twice but they will not grow. It helped the top tho!
