Ok so I need advice guys. Not sure should I pot the 2 props together they both have good roots. What y’all think? Plant Queen where are you 🤣 don’t mind the dirty nails. I have a bad habit of not wanting to wear gloves when dealing with the soil 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not quite Timmy… put’er back in the vessel and walk away 🙃

Disclaimer, I’m pretty new to hydro propagation and haven’t gotten to experiment much yet so I haven’t tested this advice. But someone told me that their rule of thumb for potting hydro props is that they want the prop to have at least one 2 inch root, that has a 2 inch root

That’s what I was told as well

Yeah! I believe I was told it shows the roots are ready to start establishing a system and that they have some strength for transfer into a solid medium. Plus, then if the plant prop does experience some shock/dies back a bit after potting it should still have enough roots to recover!

Here are three of my current props. 3 stems of Hoya burtoniae, red maranta and Zz plant. They each have secondary roots and are ready to be planted. I’ve seen it said 2 inches many times myself. I don’t go by how many inches. Rather, I will go by the ratio of leaves/plant to having enough of a root system to sustain my plant if that makes sense. There is such a thing as waiting too long which I would also not do.

Wow thank you very much for the information! Out of curiosity, what happens if you wait too long?

Sure, in terms of potting a water propagation into soil, as I stated earlier you want a strong enough root system to sustain, this will make it a little easier for the roots to adapt and develop its structure more suited for soil. When you wait too long, it’ll still continue to grow but become comfortable in its home with a structure too weak for soil. This is when you will hear or see people talking about water roots. Sometimes even when transferring to Pon IMO.

Ahhh okay I see, that makes sense. Thank you very much again for the info!

That being said, it can stay in water forever if you like. It just needs to be fed with the proper nutrients.
