Does anyone know how I propagate this? Can I stick the cut stem in water? I tried in the past and nothing happened for months and then I gave up!

How to Propagate Umbrella Plant: 3 Easy Methods
To propagate an umbrella plant (Schefflera), take a healthy, 4-6 inch stem cutting in spring or early summer. You can then root the cutting in water or soil by inserting at least one leaf node into the medium and providing bright, indirect light and consistent moisture. Soil propagation is often preferred, as it tends to produce stronger roots,
So try dipping it in soil just a tad bit without burying it.

I’m a little confused on where the node is…I cut this stem directly off the main branch.

So you did the right thing a node is basically where a new growth or old growth would usually be as-long as the cut is made at that point your okay.

A plant node is the point on a stem where leaves, buds, and shoots emerge. Nodes are vital for plant growth, maintenance, and propagation. They are important for structural support, healing, and biological processes.

So that is a node.
