# What happens if I cut my pothos at the base of the moss pole? 🤔 So…

What happens if I cut my pothos at the base of the moss pole? 🤔

So this neon Pothos has been growing on a moss pole for about 6 months. He’s doing great but I’d really like it to be a fuller plant. Then I got to thinking… could I cut it at soil line to promote growth from the base while also keeping the growth on the pole? My Googling lead me to many, many posts about chopping the tops off of moss pole plants but no answer on what would happen to a bottom chop 🤔 Like I would do nothing except cut at the soil line (between nodes) and then just leave the 2 pieces to do their thing. I’m sure the bottom would grow new shoots buuuuut what would happen to the dude hanging on the pole? Would it just keep growing? Would its bottom node find the soil in the pot through the moss pole? Surely it has actually done that already? Maybe I should just try it????

Lol oh let me show you! Hold on, I’ll take a picture of my wild child epipremnum pinnatum lol. Pinnatums are very close cousin to the aurea pothoses, so yours would have the same kind of behavior

So this plant is such a reliable grower for me that I tend to chop it first and ask questions later lol. So I’ve cut it several places over time. Any section with roots will just keep growing. The new growth points go where they want lol. Sometimes they even grow into the moss as if there’s good light in there 🤪 But if you’re more attentive than I am with this plant, you can direct the new growth fairly well (just be delicate with tender shoots). Some people who want really bushy growth will even cut in between every two nodes. Again, as long as there’s roots coming from the node, it’ll stay attached and keep growing

This one was thankfully able to find its way back out of the moss after growing into it lol

This is a different plant I’ve cut much more recently. You can see it’s got multiple new growth points. Usually just one point will become dominant after this stage, and the others will go dormant. To get all the new points to stay active, you’ll need to either cut between each node so they all become technically separate plants. Or provide really optimal conditions, which is often hard at home: 12+ hours of high light, warm temps, good humidity, and fertilizer at almost every watering

Wow! This is amazing! I knew someone on here would have asked this same question to themselves! I’m so impressed with how much growth your plant has after the cuts. Thanks so much for sharing your photos and taking the time to show me where the growth points are. It really helps to answer the question! I think I’ll cut it and see what happens!
