# I need some help, I got this clipping from my biology teacher and it…

_Publicado por OllieWollie el 2023-09-11_

I need some help, I got this clipping from my biology teacher and it was in ROUGH shape. it had scales and I’ve never dealt with them before but I got some pesticide for that. it’s a Hawaiian breed of spider plant. I’m propagating it and trying to handle the pests but I haven’t noticed any root growth at all. Is there anything I can do to help it? (Also it might be worth mentioning that the ends of the roots that were already started when I got it have browned on the ends)

How long has it been? This clipping that already had roots - what was it planted in before? If the roots are browning it's usually root rot, and if the plant is not used to water it possible can need a chance to grow water roots. I've had plants that don't transfer from soil to water and need to lose all their roots to grow new ones in water.

So should I cut off the existing roots?

If you see the brown traveling up the root then yes, I'm not sure if it's new roots that are brown then it may not be rot. Rot makes them mushy - that's a way for you to test !

Was it in soil before?

No, it was one of the babies growing off of the plant. It was not in soil

Ok they look still healthy and very firm so I don’t think it’s root rot, maybe I could cut off the ends that are brown?

Brown roots could also be aerial roots that are on the new spider babies. Just put the plant in soil with rooting hormone powder to give the roots a boost. Keep the soil damp not soggy. Keep in bright indirect light. It takes 2 - 3 weeks to get a couple inches of roots.
The spider babies in the pic came off my plants as very small plants. The tiny ones were put in soil yesterday. The middle size one is about 6 weeks in the heatwave. The largest one is over 2 months in the heat. The pots are recycled nursery pots.
