# Hi everyone. This morning, my Tradescantia zebrina had a little…

Hi everyone.
This morning, my Tradescantia zebrina had a little accident. She was just starting to flower but I was trying to get her out of the direct sun because i started to notice some brown spots. In the process of taking her out of her hanging macrame pot holder, on of the macrame string snapped the one branch that was budding pretty close to the bottom. After a 5 minute long series of dramatics, I frantically put her in one of my propagation jars. I dont know if there’s any solutions or if it’s far enough down to propagate. Anything helps.

She’s beautiful! I’m not an expert, but mine propagates SO easily, even from just a single leaf. I’ve water propagated a couple (smaller than yours pictured) and they grew roots in a few days :)

That should be plenty of space for it to grow roots, I’ve had accidents like that with much smaller stems and they’ve always bounced back better than ever!

you need to remove the flowers or the cutting will focus on blooming instead of growing roots, but once you do so it will probably root in a matter of days, tradescantia are fast growers

Just use a pencil or chopstick size instrument to poke a hole in the soil and push in the cutting. Ensure no leaves are under the soil to prevent rot. You can use root stimulator. But, these plants are considered invasive weeds in some states. They root very quickly. Just water lightly and forget it. The watering will eventually fill up the hole with soil. Takes about two weeks to get 1 inch of roots. Good luck. 🍀

So I can just add it in the soil without propagating?

Yes. Tradescantias are tough plants. They are survivors. They quickly root, pull water from the air with the fine hairs and can survive very high and low temperatures. Mine roots into nearby pots. They are thriving in 104 degree three month heatwave and one of my few plants that survived 5 days of a hard freeze this past winter. No need to baby than. Just give them 6-8 hours of full Sun, water when the soil dries and fertilizer. Trim often and put the cuttings back into the soil to make the plant lush. Good luck!
Btw, my plant has taken over 4 pots and is over four feet long! It’s very old growing over concrete! It waters itself with rain and dew most of the year.
