# I think my spider plant is trying to escape its pot. It looks happy…

_Geplaatst door Angel op 2023-09-05_

I think my spider plant is trying to escape its pot. It looks happy and healthy and thriving and at first I thought it was just because it needed repotting deeper in a bigger pot and was root bound in its current one but I’ve done that it’s in a bigger pot but it’s roots are growing outward to the sky! Do spider plants climb? are these aerial roots?

Spider plants roots are thick and fleshy. They are aggressive growers and will quickly become pot bound. Being pot bound is not a bad thing for spider plants whose roots looks like fingers. You can repot to a size you can manage. Then, cut off any roots that grow out the bottom. You may need to water and fertilize more. An alternative is to split the plant and place in smaller pots. Eventually, the process repeats.

I will correct my advice. I thought the roots were coming out the bottom. The roots in the picture are indeed aerial roots. You see these on the spider babies. You stated it needed repotting deeper. I thing you planted it too deeply or it’s laying on its side too much causing the roots to shoot up as in the picture. You should be able to see the base of each leaf.
Recommend you remove excess soil to expose the base of each leaf. Stake the plant to keep it upright. Bury the aerial root, if possible or just leave it. The plant will develop sufficient roots to keep it upright.

Thank you! Could definitely do with propping up because those leaves do feel weird just appearing out the soil! Figured it was the only way to stabilise it, any ideas of what to prop up with or where to find things ?

Honestly, it’s unusual for a spider plant to lay down unless it needs water, has too much water or has some other problem. It looks like the leaf tips have been cut meaning the plant is too dry and the leaf started dying off. Just propping up the plant won’t make it stand on its own in the long run.

Try to fix the watering issue, if that’s the problem. Water when it’s dry. My spider plants in larger pots (8”-10” wide) get water when 1/3 of the soil is dry. Also, my area has very high humidity. Plus, the plant gets bright light and Osmocote timed release fertilizer.
