Has anyone used LECA to root cuttings specifically intended to go into soil eventually (as opposed to being grown in LECA indefinitely)?

The sources I can find on the Internet about propagating in LECA are pretty thin on details (none of them mention that you need to clean and soak LECA for 24 hours before using, for example). Posts on growing in LECA are much more in-depth, but it’s hard to tell which steps are only needed because you’re in LECA long-term as opposed to just rooting and transplanting.

TL; DR: Do I need to use a hydroponic nutrient solution while rooting cuttings in LECA or do I just use plain water?

I’m not at all an expert on semi hydroponics but think it is best to propagate plants in leca as if they will stay there indefinitely. Plants need nutrients! Also, be advised that leca roots are not the same as soil roots so transferring a plant from leca to soil will also be difficult.

All of this. If you are wanting to propagate them, just do it in water. Transfer to soil when roots >3 in. If you want it in LECA later on, still propagate on water first.

Do you think it’s “water first” for all types of plants? I was trying LECA because of things I’d read online about the difficulty of propagating prayer plants in water and wanting to avoid sphagnum moss. But I haven’t tried water, so suppose I could give it a go and see what happens.

I find throwing a Calathea in perilite and water + humidity is great. I tend to use various glass/plastic containers to make terrariums type things, which are great for Calatheas.
